Like in many inventory and stock management strategies, the importance of an RFID application cannot be sidetracked in this business also. The RFID-based Inventory Control and Management System (RICMS) is designed to capture real-time data relating to transactions and movement of physical stock of anything, be it PDS items or Tendu leaves (तेंदू पत्‍ता).

But before we start, we must bear one very important thing in mind. The computerization of any system is not a translation of existing manual system into a code-based IT system. It is more than that. It is the transformation of process, nay, people, coupled with compatible amendments in rules and regulations. Hence, a computerization, nay, the ICT enablement of any system must do away with old and outdated systems and define new ones which are compatible not only with the ICT enablement strategies but with changing scenario of legal-economic-social and other procedural shifts as per the need of newly driven transactional aspects and redesigned business structures.

Now, let us take the example of stock management of Tendu leaves. Apart from the manual process of collecting the leaves, stacking and storing in godowns, the important ingredient is to sell them and monitor stock issue and amount received.

How does the RFID enablement support this set of processes and information management? It is simple.

When the stacks of Tendu leaves are put in the gunny bags, a compatible RFID tag is embedded in the bag, which possesses the information of:

  • The name and credentials of cooperative society which plucked the leaves.

  • An approximate time of plucking

  • The district

  • The number of stacks

  • The weight of bag

  • The credentials of warehouse

  • The quality management

  • Any other information the organization thinks of.

All the above information can be captured by generating compatible IDs and placing sensors.

Applying RICMS, the organization can define business logics for various transactions related with Tendu leaves stock movement. The system shall need as many RFID tags as there are bags with a compatible hardware and software.

The RFID tag shall monitor, without human intervention, the sale, the movement and the quality of the stock

What shall be advantage of mechanism as given above to be embedded in the system? The organization shall:

  1. Obtain real-time data for updating inventory records.

  2. Have a remote-based monitoring of stock as the quality which shall enable the organization to dispose of such stocks which is on the verge of quality deterioration and chronic wasted which are otherwise found in age-old warehouse management tactics.

  3. Have an improved process of decision making, of delivery with ensured visibility and movement of goods transaction and location (if needed) from anywhere by a web-enabled system.

  4. Have an improved warehouse management which shall further support the organization in eliminating errors which shall cut the operation costs.

  5. Have in its balance-sheet increased profits through elimination of various forms of chronic wastes found in typical warehouse management operations.

What should be the initiatives on the part of organization?

In fact, it is the science of doing better in terms of delivering of timely results on one hand and quality monitoring on the other. With a suitable computer software and set of hardware, coupled with the integrated process reforms, the organization must come ahead in total ICT enablement in small steps and achievable targets.
